Le Fleurs du Mal

Fleurs du Mal (1857) is the renowned collection of poems by Charles Baudelaire, which sought to “accentuate the beauty of evil.” Its relevance endures in contemporary interpretations, such as those by Danielle Hoogendoorn (1990, the Netherlands), who argues that “In Those Flowers, Infinity’s Infinity” restores, within the iconic subject of the flower, a narrative rooted in the Dutch tradition of flower representation.

This tradition dates back to the seventeenth-century Vanitas paintings, an intense and pivotal chapter in art history. The Vanitas genre, with its symbolic reflections on mortality and the fleeting nature of life, contributed to a flourishing art market. Over time, it evolved into the commodified flower market the Netherlands is known for today. Dutch floriculture, particularly tulip cultivation, remains a major economic force, with the export market now surpassing 11.5 billion euros. However, this success has had a significant environmental impact.

An emerging awareness of environmental protection brings an unexpected twist to this “evil”—one that stems from the very economic success aligned with Dutch tradition and culture. Inspired by both the beauty of flowers and the unsustainable practices within the floral industry, Danielle Hoogendoorn delves deeper into the pictorial, chromatic, and expressive qualities of floral nature during her residency at the Van Gogh House in Zundert. It is here that her admiration for Vincent van Gogh truly flourishes.

For this edition of miart, Hoogendoorn’s presentation encapsulates emotional sensitivity, placing the visitor at the heart of the experience. The space features a large wall painting of expansive floral fields as the backdrop for an “augmented subject.” The wall serves as the canvas for her paintings, while the center of the space hosts a classic display module typically used by florists in urban settings. This structure, with shelves for displaying cut flowers, will showcase Hoogendoorn’s terracotta flower sculptures, which visitors can freely assemble into unique bouquets.

These terracotta flowers, in a range of vibrant colors, symbolize the diverse language of flowers, or floriography, which has been used throughout history to convey messages and emotions. In addition to celebrating the beauty and communicative power of flowers, the installation highlights the theme of sustainability within the floral market. Visitors will have the opportunity to participate in a collective act of creation, constructing their own bouquets and, in doing so, contributing to a symbolic reinterpretation of the Abécédaire de flore.

Les Fleurs du Mal (1857), è il titolo della nota raccolta lirica di Charles Baudelaire, una raccolta che desiderava “accentuer la beauté du Mal” e ancora adesso ha una sua validità nelle interpretazioni contemporanee di Danielle Hoogendoorn (1990, the Netherlands). “In Those Flowers, Infinity’s Infinity’ restituisce infatti nell’ iconico soggetto del fiore, una storia propria della tradizione olandese della rappresentazione del fiore. Una storia specifica della cultura olandese, quella della Vanitas del XVII secolo che costituisce un capitolo intenso e importante della storia dell’arte e che ha costituito un mercato ampio e fiorente, fino alla estrema mercificazione del mercato floreale che ne hanno fatto i Paesi Bassi in tutto il ventesimo secolo, intensificandolo nei nostri giorni. Questa  forte mercato di esportazione dei fiori olandesi, nota soprattutto con l’esportazione dei tulipani, superano oggi  gli 11,5 miliardi e provoca un sempre più grave impatto sull’ambiente. Sta infatti nascendo una nuova coscienza dell’ ambiente. Un inaspettato rifiuto del “male” che nasce incredibilmente da un forte successo economico che va nella stessa direzione della tradizione e la cultura dei Paesi Bassi. 

Così Danielle Hoogendoorn, consapevole della bellezza dei fiori e della loro mancata sostenibilità del mercato floreale, innamorata di Vincent van Gogh, dove durante una residenza presso la casa Van Gogh a Zundert ne approfondisce il senso pittorico, cromatico, espressiva che appartiene   alla natura floreale. 

Lo stand per questa edizione di miart porta tutta la sensibilità emotiva in un ambiente dove l’atto performativo del visitatore sarà protagonista. Le pareti sono un  grande wall painting di estese campi floreali che Danielle Hoogendoorn realizza come sfondo di un “soggetto aumentato”, su cui sono appresi quadri  del medesimo soggetto, mentre al centro sarà installato, un classico modulo da espositore per fiori recisi, una classica struttura di quelle che incontriamo nelle strade delle nostre città, utilizzata dai fioristi, dove sulle mensole verranno esposti i suoi fiori. I fiori di Danielle sono plasticamente modellati in terracotta e si potranno comporre come lo stesso visitatore desidera. 

Si  potranno confezionare  nei vasi, unici bouquet di  un mix di fiori colorati che rappresentano le molteplici varietà della florigrafia  con cui si esprime proprio i linguaggi dei fiori. 

Inoltre  viene accentato il senso della sostenibilità di questo mercato. Oltre alla raccolta si esprime anche il piacere del fiore e della sua forza comunicativa che gli appartiene. 

L’attribuzione è il significato simbolico dei fiori, conosce adesso un rinnovato senso, realizzato dal fruitore stesso che  sarà il protagonista di una riscrittura collettiva  dell’l’Abécédaire de flore.
